When you’re out boating, you may find yourself having to tackle rough conditions despite taking every possible precaution. While this might seem a bit scary for those who are new to the world of boating, it's important to be prepared for the worst-case scenario. Here’s a brief guide to help you prepare for navigating rough waters.

Stay Ahead of the Weather

Remember to check the weather forecast the night before you leave and again the morning you depart. Weather can change quickly, so you must stay on top of the forecast. Keep an eye on cloud formations and wind conditions, and work on improving your ability to predict conditions. Get a transmitter radio that you can use to check ongoing weather updates even while you’re out boating.

Direct Your Passengers

Have passengers put on their personal flotation devices (PFDs) and foul weather gear ready to go. Ask them to sit in the lowest part of the boat, which tends to be in the center, to avoid being thrown off the craft. If you have any heavy items on board, put them in the rear of the vessel. This can help keep the bow from diving into big waves.

Ride It Out

When the weather is rough, remain calm, and if you’re not making progress returning to the dock, it’s best to ride out the storm. Angle your boat 45 degrees to the waves to moderate the force of the swells hitting the hull. When the bow cuts through the waves, your vessel is at its most stable position and this will prevent your craft from bouncing around.
