One of the joys of owning your own boat is being able to take it out any time that you want. You don’t have to deal with the hassle of renting a boat (or making a friend with a boat) when you want to create great memories on the water. And it gets even better when the sun goes down! An overnight boat trip is the best way to enjoy nature as it was intended, and pretty easy to plan. Here are a few tips to help you get ready to drop anchor and have an exciting overnighter. If you have any questions, come see us at The Harbor (Boat & Yacht Sales). We’re located in Branson, Missouri and we serve boating enthusiasts in Springfield and Kansas City, Missouri.

Start at the Slip

Many boat owners like to check in on their boat at the slip on a regular basis, and many of us like to take our time. Our boats are our pride and joy, and there’s nothing like spending some quality time aboard. Before your trip, make a “dry run” in the slip. You can always go into town to pick up any supplies as needed, and troubleshoot anything that doesn’t work. Make sure that you spend plenty of time anchoring, docking, and tying off near home during daylight hours for practice. Any experienced captain will tell you the importance of developing “muscle memory” for routine tasks, and the pre-gaming that you do at the marina will get you ready for the big night on the water.

Planning and Provisioning

Don't go too far out for your first overnighter, and pay attention to the weather forecast. Know your limitations as a captain and develop contingencies for sudden storms. Make sure that you know how to operate all of your boat’s navigational equipment and how to deal with any problems with the head. A clogged toilet can really ruin an otherwise romantic evening, and might even force you ashore.

Plan your menu, and develop a checklist for supplies. Double check everything before you leave, and remember the difference between “wants” and “needs” when you’re preparing for your trip. You’re going to get away from it all and don’t need to overpack. Keep it simple. Take plenty of water, plenty of extra batteries and some warm weather (and wet weather) gear.

Safety First

Assume nothing when it comes to safety gear. This includes life jackets, throwables, a first-aid kit, a signaling device, and a fire extinguisher. Make sure your family knows where you’re going and when you’re expected to return.  Review safety procedures with every soul on board before every trip.
